A New Breed of Collision Avoidance

Traffic awareness is everyone’s concern, but so has been the cost of traffic systems, until now. PCAS XRX is the first ever portable, passive, stand-alone collision avoidance system for general aviation to offer direction from within the cockpit.

PCAS™, or Portable Collision Avoidance System, is Zaon’s solution for providing high-quality, low cost traffic information to the general aviation pilot. XRX is our flagship model, providing a complete picture in a simple, easy-to-use device.

PCAS represents our third generation of proven traffic detection technology. XRX is truly a “Plug and Go” device with its built-in antenna system and built-in display.

So, what can XRX do for you?

The one that gives directionAn industry first, XRX detects threat aircraft direction from within your cockpit using a cutting-edge, proprietary, self-contained antenna design. With direction, locating and identifying traffic is simple and easy, and traffic information is “three-dimensional”, which means it can be displayed on third-party systems, such as moving map GPS devices. Read more about this below.
Don’t let the tiny size fool youXRX was designed to be placed on the glareshield. Yet despite its incredibly small and self-contained, XRX sacrifices none of the accuracy found in much more expensive, installed systems. The unit is only 3.9” (100mm) wide, 3.6” (93mm) deep, and 2.7” (69mm) tall. The majority of the height is for the enclosed antenna array.

In most cases, the unit sits below the visual line of the propeller, out of the pilot’s line-of-sight and presents useful traffic information in plain sight in front of the pilot. If a different configuration is desired, several options exist. XRX has a 45° mode which allows the unit to be placed on the right side of the glareshield and rotated so that the screen is pointed at the pilot. Another option is a suction-cup mount. See our complete line of PCAS accessories for more information.

“Traffic, front-right, 0.9 miles, 500 feet below and decending” XRX delivers the three “dimensions” of traffic information that pinpoints where traffic is located: direction, range and relative altitude. Armed with this information, you’ll know just where the threats lie. XRX detects and tracks all aircraft in the detection window you specify and displays the information on a built-in, easy-to-read LCD display. The top three threats are displayed using simple visual cues.

For the primary threat, direction is displayed in a compass rose around the range and relative altitude information. The second and third threats are displayed, along with the local heading and relative altitude information. XRX also displays your local  squawk code. Advanced features are included such as visual and audible voice alerts and advisories, an easy-to-use menu interface, and local information. XRX displays “3-D View” quadrant bearing information, as well as relative altitude and range, all from inside the cockpit and without the need for external antenna arrays.

Operational SimplicityThe easy-to-read LCD display boasts large numerals and EL backlighting for night operation. All parameters are controlled by an easy-to-use menu system: range and altitude settings, type of aircraft, screen options, and more. Flying a pressurized aircraft? XRX includes a pressurized mode for use in a pressurized cockpit with no external static line connections needed. The unit also monitors aircraft bus voltage and host transponder operations and is powered through aircraft power (12-40 V compatible).
Flexible detection window and intelligent alertsXRX sets up a “bubble of awareness” around you and reports any traffic in this window. The size of this window is easily defined using a simple menu that sets the range and altitude maximums. The detection window has a maximum range of 6 NM and altitude of ±2500 feet. PCAS utilizes both visual and audible alerts if the traffic gets close enough to become a threat.

Level Headset Voice Beeps Action to take
Advisory  ——————— 2 Attempt to make visual contact with threat
Alert   ——————— 4 Make visual contact and avoid

The most important job of any collision avoidance system is to tell you what is a threat, and quietly provide information on traffic that is not a threat. An important distinction with PCAS is the difference between traffic detection and traffic alerts. XRX will detect any aircraft in the detection window you specify, but will alert you to traffic that has become a threat based on the aircraft’s relative altitude, range, track over time, and ascent/descent status.

Reliable accuracyFollowing in the footsteps of previous models, the traffic information accuracy is the best in the industry. Traffic accuracy is 0.2 NM on average for range, ±200 ft for altitude (defined by TSO standards set for transponder encoders), and ±22° for direction. XRX also displays your local squawk code and pressure altitude for monitoring your transponder encoder output, as well as bearing. XRX includes many built-in sensors for razor-sharp accuracy, including a pressure altimeter for relative altitude accuracy, a solid-state 16-point compass for bearing accuracy, a solid-state attitude and bank sensor for bearing accuracy, thermal monitors and overtemp protection for accuracy in any environment.
Plays well with othersGet XRX traffic on your GPS or EFIS system, including Garmin, Blue Mountain, Grand Rapids, AnywhereMap, Hangar B-17, PCAvionics, and many more. Introducing a simple way to get traffic on your moving map display. A simple hookup to your PCAS™ XRX™ directly to your system and you’re off and running. Traffic alerts, popups, voice alerts, the reliability and accuracy of XRX overlayed right onto the screen of an old friend. Get the precision and all-over coverage that only XRX can provide, directly on the screen you’re already looking at.

The FDARM-IPD-Y-2 has all the same features as the standard version, but is designed to accommodate the smaller, second generation Apple iPad 2. All mounting specifications, exterior dimensions, and operational elements are identical for both units. Apple iPads are not included. These products are designed to securely mount to the yoke of a Gulfstream. The unit provides a clear, unobstructed view of flight maps and charts. The FDARM-IPD-Y/-2 can also be rotated 90 degrees to take advantage of the iPad’s landscape mode.

The FDARM-IPD-Y/-2 can tilt FWD and AFT approximately 15° in both landscape and portrait modes allowing the user to adjust the viewing angle of the display. The mount also includes a 5 volt charger. This charging capability is an option, which the installer will have to determine if the unit will be powered prior to installing. It is the installer’s responsibility to understand the product’s requirements and to install the product in compliance with industry standards and safety. ** NOTE: If the iPad is running processor-intensive applications, it may not charge, or hold charge, even when connected to a power source. **

The FDARM-IPD-Y/-2 is perfect for in flight use of the Apple iPad. Once the flight is complete, the entire mount assembly can be easily removed from the yoke, or with the pull of a latch, the iPad can be removed from its mount.

Spirit Avionics would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Have a safe and happy Holiday and thank you for a GREAT 2010.

Use it or lose it??? Looking to spend the rest of your 2010 budget money but don’t know what on? Consider spares, EFB, Handheld GPS, CASP or HAPP warranty.

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

We see it every year. Droves of flight departments scrambling to use the last remnants of their 2010 budget money rather than lose what’s left. If this is you, consider setting yourself up with some new, portable/carry on technology or an insurance policy.

New, portable/carry on technology would include Electronic Flight Bags (EFB). We’re dealers for ADR, IMS, DAC and Universal. All of these EFB’s have their purpose and there is a wide range of Class 1, 2 and 3 to choose from. Also available are portable handheld GPS. We’re dealers for Garmin (GPSMAP and AERA) and Bendix King (AV8TOR).

Insurance policy would include buying a spare to keep on hand in case the gremlins show up again in that one unit that always fails at the exact wrong time. Also consider a Rockwell Collins CASP or Honeywell HAPP warranty.

If you are looking for a way to use the last of your money for this year, please give us a call. We’ll be glad to help you determine where you’ll get the most bang for your buck.

Happy Thanksgiving from Spirit Avionics.

Well, we’ve been done with our airplane’s interior upgrade for quite some time, I just haven’t had the time to post a message here with new pictures. Below you will find before and after shots of the panel. It is an amazing difference.  We’ve been flying a lot here these past 2 months and everything is working just great.  What a great addition and enhancement to safety, enjoyment and ease of flight.

The list of new equipment includes Garmin G500, GNS-430W, GTX-330, GLD-69A, SL-30. JP Instruments EDM-930. PS ENgineering PMA-8000Bmp3. Mid Continent Instruments Lifesaver Gyro. Century Altitude Preselect, Kannad 406 ELT and Lightspeed Headsets. Plus all new instrument panels made here at Spirit from scratch that were powder coated at Performance Powder Coating of Columbus and then Silk-screened by Extended Resources of Columbus.

The all new interior (seat covers, carpet, door panels, and glareshield) was done by one of our partner companies, Tritex Air. We’d like to thank them for doing such a great job.

We even replaced all of the plastics such as the console, pillars, headliner and baggage area with new pieces from Plane Plastics.

Thanks to everyone who supported us on this project.

NBAA 2010. Thanks for stopping by.

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

After a week of hard-core exhibiting with our MX Solutions Plus partner companies I’m finally back in the office and out from underneath all of the immediate follow ups. This year’s NBAA show was a big success for us all and we’re so very thankful to all of our loyal customers who stopped by to pay us a visit. We also want to thank those of you who spent time with us at the show this year who weren’t yet our customers. We promise to work very hard to keep all of our customers happy and that doesn’t stop when the show stops. It’s a 24/7/365 culture here at Spirit Avionics. Anything you need from us, anytime you need it, we will be ready to serve you.

As expected the majority of avionics interest at this year’s convention included WAAS FMS, in-cabin broadband internet & Wi-Fi, saving money on avionics exchanges/rentals/repairs, and CASP and HAPP. There was also a fair amount to activity on the government opportunity side of our house as well.

We can say with certainty that this year was great fun and very successful. We’re already looking forward to NBAA 2011 in Las Vegas. We’re also preparing to attend, and possibly exhibit at, the NBAA Schedulers and Dispatchers Conference in Savannah, GA in Feb, and exhibit at the NBAA Maintenance Management Conference in San Diego in April.

We hope to see you before, but if we don’t we’ll see you at one of the many shows we’ll be attending/exhibiting at between now and then. Thanks again to all who made our NBAA 2010 show a success!
